An outbreak that we didn't see coming:
Federal inspectors look at every processing plant in the country for chicken, but they sometimes fail to identify salmonella. In this article on Frontline, they identified the 5 cases that might explain why they fail to catch the pathogen. There is a level of salmonella that is allowed to be in the Turkey, after all these cases the level has been lowered to 13.5%. i also didn't know that there might only be one bird tested in each plant a day. I feel that it's better safe then sorry with this kind of stuff especially since more then a few people died in these cases. I also learned that chicken parts are not subject to salmonella testing, which means it could have an extreme amount in it and not be tested. I would like to read more about how salmonella affects the chicken and why any is allowed at all.
